Engaged by Cementa Inc. to create a feature image for Cementa 19 Contemporary Arts Festival in Kandos New South Wales, the opportunity arose for applying my thinking about Russian Constructivist dance costumes, maquettes and puppets some of which are in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia to playing with images of industrial pattern in the collection of Kandos Museum. A puppet emerged, a kind of town crier character to trumpet the joy and circus of excitement the festival brings to our small regional town. Kandos is an industrial town that was born in the early Twentieth Century, a period of global social unrest and revolution its purpose was to make cement for Nation building. Now in the 21st century, Kandos is post-industrial and its residents we are becoming increasingly impacted by the unsustainable growth philosophies of last century. A Town Crier needs to call for calm and reason.
