No More Blue Horizons
Fiona MacDonald communicates a sense of wonder of appearances but delights in ambiguity and contradiction. Her large, lurid and almost shockingly convincing collage portraits make Arcimboldo and Ernst seem almost shabby by comparison. It is as if Arcimboldo’s organically grown Milanese vegetables have been junked for the most artificially cultivated American supermarket produce, or Ernst had exchanged the dusty dereliction of Arizona’s deserts for the sparkling clarity of the Great Barrier Reef’s waters with punk fish and pink corals.

Fish scales, baroque carving, sea anemones and printed circuits are put together with such virtuosic cutting that, unlike so many collage images, they present us with one staggering improbability in person.
